5 Tips to Keeping Your Pets Safe When Disasters Strike

In honor of National Pet Preparedness Month, we want to raise awareness about the importance of including our beloved pets in emergency preparedness plans. Being prepared can make a huge difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of our furry companions.

Our pets are part of our families, and should be a top priority. Here are 5 tips to help you get ready:

  1. Assemble a pet-specific emergency kit that includes essentials such as food, water, medications, a leash, a carrier, and copies of important documents.
  2. Make sure your pet’s identification is up to date, and consider microchipping them for added security.
  3. Identify pet-friendly accommodations in advance, such as hotels or shelters, and keep a list of their contact information.
  4. Practice evacuations with your pet to reduce stress and increase their familiarity with the process.
  5. Ensure you have a list of emergency contacts, including your veterinarian. If you are part of a Pet Nabor community, have a few local contacts, or Pet Pals, listed in case you are not able to get to your pet immediately and need additional support.

Taking the time to prepare adequately can make all the difference when disaster strikes. By prioritizing pet safety, developing evacuation plans, and staying connected, we can ensure the well-being and security of our furry friends during times of crisis. Let’s be proactive and protect them, just as they bring joy and love to our lives.
